- In 1988, the Los Angeles City College Theatre Academy established the foundation for a professional resident theatre company, The City Playhouse, as part of the Professional Theatre Training Program. Its premiere production of the award-winning adaptation of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath opened to critical acclaim and standing-room-only audiences. This production began a new chapter in Theatre Academy history.
- The City Playhouse, a collaborative effort of working professionals, alumni and Theatre Academy students, designers, and directors, produces two plays at the Academy each season. This provides a unique opportunity for students to work with professional actors and designers within the training environment. Students participating in City Playhouse productions create professional contacts essential for starting a successful career after graduation.
