The President's Corner

By Tina Saddington

Happy New Year! It's time for our annual meeting and time to pay your dues (no, it never ends!). We've had a lot happen since our last newsletter– and a lot not happen.

First, I must apologize for the postponement of "Lost in Boston"–
the bottom line on the fundraiser was that almost all of the talent who agreed to donate their time got paying gigs and both the director and producer felt that to do the fundraiser they envisioned required more than seven performers (down from thirty, originally). There is
a possibility of doing the show this March at the Pasadena Playhouse, and, if not that, we are working on other ideas. In the meantime, the preparation for this show depleted our funds severely.

Please assist us in recouping by continuing your membership in LACCTAA. We REALLY do need your support.

Some sad news–Kathleen Hietala passed away in December of liver cancer. I was fortunate enough to talk with her earlier last year after she sent me a book of her poetry. She knew then that she didn't have much time left and it was a good conversation. It brings it home again that there isn't much time and all we can do is live our lives as fully as possible.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks to Lisa Hashimoto and Kari Leigh Floyd for their incredible contributions to LACCTAA, and, even more, for their friendship. I love you guys!

Thank you for your continued interest in your alma mater, and we'll see you at the Wild Thyme!

General Membership Meeting Called

With the new year comes an opportunity to join and participate in LACCTAA.

Our Annual General Membership Meeting will be held on Monday, January 25, 1999, at 7:30pm in the Caminito Theatre.

All alumni are invited, as are all those who would like to be supportive associates of our organization.

Our goal is to support the LACC Theatre Academy and its students and to provide a network through which alumni and associates can connect both professionally and socially.

As the Player in Pippin says, "JOIN US!

What We've Accomplished So Far

Together we can accomplish much more!

Since its inception in January of l993, LACCTAA has sponsored a number of events, raised money for and awarded many scholarships, judged at the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California's Fall and Spring Festivals, and actively assisted the Theatre Academy in recruiting new students.

We have established an ongoing Playreading Series, staged readings of new works, painted the Caminito and Cameo theatres, held Opening Night Receptions, tended to

the landscaping surrounding the theatre building, held a Speakers Forum, produced RadioLive I and Il, created a Hotline for information, kept alumni in touch with each other, and more.

It is through the leadership of the LACCTAA Board that all these events occurred. To help us continue to grow and to support the theatre, please join us on the Board. Please call the LACCTAA Hotline at 213-368-6585 and leave your name and telephone number, and a Board member will contact you about coming aboard!

Your Dues Are Due!

Our dues structure is based on the calendar year, and, with the New Year upon us, it is time to renew your commitment to quality education and quality theatre.

Dues are $25 per year or $100 for five years (that's one year FREE!). Your dues go toward funding our special projects, including scholarships, printing and mailing of the newsletter, and recruitment for the Academy.

The membership form is on the last page. Please fill it out TODAY and return to LACCTAA, PO Box l 291695, Los Angeles, CA 90029.

Make checks payable to: LACC Foundation and note on the memo line that it is for LACCTAA. A whole new generation of Academy-trained actors, directors, and technicians thank you!

Bye Bye Board Members

It is with real regret that we say goodbye to two of our most active Board members, Lisa Hashimoto and Kari Leigh Floyd.

Lisa is one of the directors of the Design/ Technical Theatre program at City College. Her credits are too numerous to list. She has been an invaluable asset to LACCTAA as our technical advisor and staff liaison to the Theatre Academy.

Kari is an Academy graduate, a talented actress, writer, director, newsletter editor, Opening Night reception coordinator, and all around Academy Booster. She has made many significant contributions to LACCTAA and we will miss her enthusiasm.

Parting is such sweet sorrow!
